Six of them, actually, by the unique fantasist, artist and illustrator Mervyn Peake. I think I like “The Trouble with Geraniums” best. I’ve only fairly recently become acquainted with Peake’s astonishingly strange Gormenghast novels, though they have been long held in high esteem by astute readers of fantastic literature–a view which I now share; imagine Dickens with an ample tincture of the madness of Poe, and it kind of gives you a scent . . . .
